Four Things Every Parent Should Know Before Choosing a Dance Studio
What Type of Dance Floor is Used?
Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on bones and joints. Most dance footwear does not provide any cushioning or support, so the shock of dance movement can place a lot of pressure on the knees and back of a dancer. This is especially apparent over time as dancers spend many hours, months or years in the studio. The best way to prevent against potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional “sprung” wood dance floor. Our sprung wood floor is built with airspace and foam underneath it to absorb shock and enhance performance in physical activity, while greatly reducing the chance for injury. Some studios do not use professional sprung wood floors because of the expense involved and instead opt for a dance surface over a concrete floor. We know that the value of good health is priceless and therefore we do everything we can to promote it!
The top layer of the dance floor is also an important factor to consider. Our multi-purpose floor accommodates for the many styles of dance we offer. It is perfect for everything from ballet and ballroom to jazz and hip hop.
Is the Faculty Qualified?
Most young dancers will start their dance education anywhere from ages 3 to 10 years old. Therefore most young dancers will invest anywhere from 5 – 15 years in one dance studio. That adds up to a big investment of time and money for the parent over the years. What is surprising is that a parent will take more time planning for a vacation then picking a long term dance studio for their child. So how does one know if their child is receiving good training?
Our goal at InnerRhythms is to offer a safe and thorough education in dance equivalent to the interests and abilities of the serious student. The techniques in each of the dance styles at the Centre are specifically designed to complement and enhance one another. It is highly recommended that students expose themselves to more than one dance style in order to experience a more complete development. InnerRhythms offers you the area's best instructors, each teaching in their style of expertise. We know that it is an important part of a dancers education to learn a variety of styles from many different teachers. We believe the power of dance and music will manifest itself in awakening individual and community consciousness.
What is the Class Size?
If the dance class has fewer students in it each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun. With younger students, it is easier for a teacher to maintain control over the class and ensure each student understands the concepts and instructions. A smaller class size also ensures that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique.
Our studio limits all of our beginning level and kids classes to a maximum of just 12 students per class, most with a 6:1 student teacher ratio! Adult and advanced level classes are full with 15-20 students.
Are There Opportunities for Advancement?
Many students dance for fun and recreation but what if your child wants more? InnerRhythms provides classes for beginner to professional dancers and also boasts two award winning, semi-professional dance companies as well as two junior dance companies for younger dancers. Many of our alumni have gone on to pursue careers in the performing arts field. Whether your child plans on becoming a professional dancer or just dances for fun, at InnerRhythms you can be sure that you are providing them with the best training possible.
